This study analyses the latent presence of Aristophanes in Ach. Tat. VIII 9, the speech delivered by the priest of Artemis at Clitophon’s trial for adultery. Achilles Tatius declares that the priest was as good at quips and gibes as the plays of Aristophanes. Even though this statement can be read as a generic reference to the comic style of the priest’s speech, the speech might really be influenced by Aristophanic comedy in its themes and argumentation.
