The text of Varro Ling. IX 24 a septentrionali †circumit cum his ad sol[i]stitium should be corrected to a septentrionali circumitu et is ad solstitium. The word circumitus, attested in Varro and Cicero, is an orthographical variant of the usual circuitus. The new conjecture circumitu is preferable to circulo, previously suggested by K.O. Müller, because it allows us to better explain the genesis of the error.
