This paper discusses text and interpretation of two among the most significant fragments of Alcaeus, frr. 70 and 130b Liberman. Contrary to the dominant portrait of the poet as an untiring champion of internal strife against his political enemies, these two poems show that Alcaeus was capable of strategically giving up the fight, and that his political ideal does not seem to have been in contrast in any way with the polis ideal.
